FEBRUARY OAK BAY EMERGENCY PROGRAM
PUBLIC INFORMATION SESSION
Lessons from Hurricane Katrina that could help Oak Bay in its Response and Recovery
Five months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast Rob Johns of the Victoria
& Esquimalt Emergency Social Services team visited southern Louisiana and Mississippi.
The goal was to speak to local citizens, officials, planners, FEMA representatives,
and representatives from non-government organizations and to learn about the recovery
process to date. In this presentation he will briefly look at the recovery process
and how learning can be applied to local communities in British Columbia.
Our Guest Speaker:
Rob Johns is an emergency planner with the City of Victoria. Most of his responsibilities
pertain to Emergency Social Services, which is the service that assists people displaced
from their homes following an emergency evacuation. Rob has been part of the Victoria
Emergency Management for 15 years, 9 of those years as a volunteer and six in his
current paid position. He has recently taken on the position of President of the
Emergency Social Services Association (ESSA).
