Radio Communications Team

Coordinator: Philip Lin VE7PL

Oak Bay has established three communications "nets" for emergency situations. Every Wednesday evening throughout the year, volunteers operate on-air nets in order to maintain equipment and keep operating skills honed. Operation times and frequencies are as follows:

- VHF Amateur Radio, 146.445 MHz. On air each Wednesday at 6:45 pm.
- UHF Amateur Radio, 446.275 MHz. On air each Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
- Citizen Band Radio, Channel 30. On air each Wednesday at 7:15 pm.

Amateur Radios generally have clearer reception and a more effective range than Citizen Band radios however an Amateur Radio licence is required to operate on these frequiencies. If you are interested in obtaining an Amateur Radio licence, please contact the radio communications coordinator. Radio licences are not required for the operation of Citizen Band radios.

The Oak Bay Emergency Program has a number of Citizen Band and Amateur Radio handheld radios available for use by qualified Zone Responders.

Radio Communications volunteers have also established a radio room as a base of operations at the Oak Bay Municipal Hall, callsign VE7OEP and a Mobile Emergency Response Vehicle (MERV), callsign VA7OEP.
