Individual and Family
Preparedness
Step One - Know the risks in Oak Bay;
- Power outages
-
Wind storms
-
Earthquake
-
Tsunami or Storm Surge
-
Hazmat Incidents
-
Influenza /Infectious Disease Outbreak
-
Severe Weather
Step Two - Make a Plan
Every Oak Bay resident needs an emergency plan. Although we can not prevent
a disaster from happening, each of us can plan and prepare for a disaster. By having
a plan and an emergency kit we can minimize the effects of the disaster on our families
and neighbours. For information on developing an emergency plan for your family
or neighbourhood contact the Oak Bay Emergency program at 592-9121 or you can refer
to the Individual and Neighbourhood All–Hazard Emergency Preparedness Workbook
on line at www.pep.bc.ca or www.getprepared.ca
Step Three - Prepare A Kit
During an emergency you and your family could be on your own for an extended
period of time. Emergency services may not be readily available as increasing demands
are placed on responders. It may take emergency workers some time to get to you
as they help those in most critical need. Each family should prepare an emergency
kit capable of being self sufficient for at least ONE WEEK. Please refer to the suggested
emergency kit on this website
(click here to download information) as well as www.pep.bc.ca or www.getprepared.ca
Workshops
A series of Emergency Preparedness Begins With You! Workshops are being held in April and May, 2008. Emergency preparedness in Oak Bay is about
neighbours helping neighbours. The first step however is being personally
prepared to enable you and your family to be self-sufficient for a minimym of 7
days after a major emergency or disaster. Emergency Preparedness Begins
With You! is a two-hour workshop that provides detailed information
and practical application to individual and family emergency preparedness.
Please refer to the 2008 Community Events page for Dates and Locations.
