Emergency Preparedness
Week Planning
Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) in Canada is an annual national event. This
year it will take place May 6-12. Activities conducted during EP Week are aimed
at increasing public awareness of emergency preparedness. Planned events and activities
involve emergency responders, volunteer organizations, government representatives,
the media and educational institutions.
EP Week advances the awareness of emergency preparedness using self-help guides,
themed events and other promotional materials, such as a dedicated web site.
B.C. has a robust emergency management system that has been well-tested over time
and many communities have had significant experience dealing with major emergencies.
The frequency, severity and nature of emergencies requires strong leadership from
elected and emergency officials. A commitment from individuals and families to get
prepared reduces suffering and saves lives during disasters.
The major objectives of EP Week are: to increase the national awareness level of
the importance of personal all-hazard emergency preparedness and to increase the
knowledge of Canada’s emergency management system.
Some typical EP Week activities include:
· Local proclamations
· Articles in local newspapers on region-specific risks
· Information kits and activities for schools
· Personal preparedness information circulated to employees and key contacts
· Recognition ceremonies for volunteers or emergency responders
· Displays at trade shows and conferences and in malls
· Information kits prepared for local media
· Mock-disaster exercises or emergency response simulations
· Demonstrations and emergency preparedness displays by first responders and volunteer
groups
· "Emergency Preparedness Week" banners in public spaces throughout your community
