What You Need To Know To Stay Safe!  (Public Information Session) (event complete)

Many people believe you automatically shut off your gas supply after an earthquake.  This is not true.  If you turn off your gas needlessly, you could find yourself without heat, hot water or cooking facilities for a long time.  Learn when and how to turn off your gas or propane supply and what to do or not do to keep safe.

California Learnings: Successful Public Education Messaging  (Public Information Session) (event complete)
Guest Speakers: Lise Anne Pierce, Provincial Manager of the BC Disaster Management Program, Red Cross and Rob Johns, Emergency Coordinator for the City of Victoria.

Rob and Lise Anne travelled to Southern California to be part of The Great Southern California ShakeOut, the largest earthquake preparedness activity in U.S. history, where millions of California residents participated in the drill.  They will share findings on what reaches people in marketing emergency preparedness campaigns, the use of alternate media and social networking and how these learnings apply to local emergency programs and support organizations in B.C. in their efforts to spread the preparedness message.

These Emergency Preparedness Workshops are an abbreviated version of the Oak Bay Program's two-hour evening Workshops, containing less information about how to shut off utilities and more on developing personal plans.

Oak Bay Sea Rescue Public Information Session (event complete)
Guest Speaker: Glenn D Barker, Unit Leader, Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit 33, Oak Bay Sea Rescue.
Date: Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 at 7:00 pm.
Location: Windsor Park Pavilion, 2451 Windsor Road (on Windsor between Transit and Newport Avenue).
Search and rescue crews are the backbone of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary's emergency response activities.  Crews consist of dedicated, volunteer professionals on call for a week at a time.  The Oak Bay Sea Rescue Society has a long history and plays an integral part in saving lives at sea.  It also plays a vital role in Oak Bay's response and recovery capability.

Emergency Preparedness Begins With You! workshops will be offered within the Oak Bay Community bimonthly.
As part of a Seniors Mitigation and Preparedness Initiative, the Emergency Preparedness Outreach Team will offer monthly Emergency Preparedness Information Sessions and Workshops, starting in September, within the community at sites that serve seniors and potentially high-risk groups.  A webpage for the Oak Bay Seniors Mitigation and Preparedness Project is being developed that will contain information on the goals of the project, its tie-in to an age-friendly UBCM grant, as well as easy to understand and implement non-structural mitigation and preparedness strategies that seniors and high-risk groups can take to keep themselves safe before and during a disaster situation.  This webpage will be linked to the Oak Bay Emergency Program and to other community websites.

Wildfires 2009 - Response, Recovery and Lessons Learned

Bob, Bev, Elysia, Hansi and Sonja all responded to the Wildfires in West Kelowna, Vernon and Kamloops, in a variety of capacities and for different organizations. Some responded more than once. You will learn how the various organizations get activated, the role they played, what worked well, lessons learned and how we can use this information to help prepare our communities.
