Emergency preparedness in Oak Bay is about neighbours helping neighbours.  The first step however is being personally prepared to enable you and your family to be self-sufficient for a minimym of 7 days after a major emergency or disaster.  Emergency Preparedness Begins With You! is a two-hour workshop that provides detailed information and practical application to individual and family emergency preparedness.

Oak Bay Emergency Program and Oak Bay Block Watch would like to invite the residents and business community of Oak Bay to a barbeque. Both groups will have information about their programs available. The OBEP will have its Mobile Emergency Response Vehicle (MERV) & Group Lodging Trailer on display. Block Watch/Police will have its vehicle on display as well. Emergency Preparedness for Seniors (event completed)
The Canadian Red Cross is presenting their Emergency Preparedness for Seinors workshop.  Volunteers from the Oak Bay Emergency Program will support and provide follow-up outreach for our community's seniors as needed.  The focus during this session is on developing personal networks, being personally prepared, assessing any functional disabilities and identifying solutions.

Kirsten Brown - Manager, Planning, Health Emergency Management Unit, Ministry of Health Services and a Deputy Director with the Victoria/Esquimalt ESS Team.
Bev Stenning - Benefit Officer, Canada Pension Plan, an instructor with the Justice Institute & Canadian Red Cross and Deputy Director with the Victoria/Esquimalt ESS Team.
Sonja Ruthe - Community Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and acting ESSD for Oak Bay and a Disaster Management volunteer and instructor with the Canadian Red Cross.

Kirsten, Bev and Sonja went to New Orleans in June as part of an international Learning Inquiry workshop that explored the strengths and resilience as well as the challenges of recovery - 3 years post Katrina. They met with local leaders in their communities to learn about what they were doing to enhance New Orleans recovery and how community change efforts succeed best after a disaster.
